Robert
I've been in hiding for a few months finishing my degree and now only two weeks left until the final hand in. Most of my recent work needs to remain a mystery to you until it's exhibition time in June and July. Check out NOW WHAT website and blog to keep updated with our July graduate show in London.
Meanwhile here is a tiny part of a poster I've just finished for the launch of Wish magazine, created by Carrie Harwood and Lucy Nicholls. I'll have to wait until the grand unveiling of the magazine to show you the poster but here is Robert Downey Jr.

Happy International Women's Day
Happy International Women's Day everyone! I spotted this lovely woman's body in a car park and hope to go on a graffiti mission soon. Here in Brighton there are some interesting events happening for International Women's Day. Find out more at the Feminist Brighton blog.
Women Rise Against the Cuts for International Women’s Day
On Saturday 10th March at 1pm, Brighton groups Women Against the Cuts and Feminist Brighton will surprise and intrigue passers by with a flash mob style poetry performance outside Jubilee Library.
The mass recital of Maya Angelou’s poem ‘Still I Rise’ is a fitting anthem to women’s creativity, determination and achievements, which are celebrated around the world on International Women’s Day.
The event will also highlight the Coalition Government’s cuts and their disproportionate impact on women. Evidence now shows the Government’s assault on public services and benefits is now actually reversing women’s equality in the UK. Women are likely to be hardest hit – suffering 72% of the cuts. Women’s employment has been rising (in contrast to men’s) with female unemployment now at a 23-year high.

Oh Comely
Recently I did an illustration for Oh Comely magazine which is out now in the shops. I'm one of 5 designers selected to illustrate a piece of advice we had been given when we were younger. My illustration is pictured above on the right, a good tip for brightening up your bedroom.
I had never picked up a copy of Oh Comely before but I read it cover to cover when it arrived in the post, I would really recommend it! I particularly enjoyed a story by Theo Brainin on page 41. You can get yourself a copy at most design book shops or WHSmiths on the high street.

The PINK / BLUE Divide
Here is a short film I made recently as part of an investigation into the construction of gender. The project stemmed from a series of interviews, where I asked 15 people about their experiences of gender acquisition and their perceptions of how the gender divide affects their lives. The script can be seen below, formed from the range of opinions.
Gendered jobs, gendered clothes,
gendered colours, gendered toys,
gendered activities, gendered attitudes.
The moment we are born our biological sex is identified and from this point onwards our gender and identity is slowly constructed for us through our cultural experience.
We are sold an idea of what we should be.
Fitting into one box or the other.
Male, masculine, man, boy or female, feminine, woman, girl.
Masculine means to me level headed, logical, a problem solver who has physical strength and an ability to hold in emotions.
Masculine is not really thinking, just doing. Dominant,. A no nonsense attitude, a confidence, a bravery.
To have an ego is to be masculine, men are enabled to be much more confident.
Ideally as a man you are a big and strong person, maybe you are not, you just act as if you are. It’s a superman fantasy, you just want to be this impervious thing that no one can hurt or touch. It’s a weird relic of the past where people need to fight to survive.
People expect me to be aggressive but I’m actually quite passive. It’s just my size that people think I’m masculine, but I’m overtly sensitive.
Sometimes you have to give into your emotions and that’s OK, that’s not a vulnerability, it’s a strength.
Femininity means, decorated, gentle,
fragile, maternal, emotional, hairless, preserved.
Beautiful, floral.
To be feminine is restrictive. I don’t feel like I can be funny. I don’t feel like I can fulfill myself in what I do. Women are strong and powerful but femininity tells them to be passive and dependent, where female power only lies in sexuality and ‘beauty’.
Just by changing your haircut, you feel boyish and less attractive. I think women feel a pressure to accentuate their figures through what they wear.
It is hard to pinpoint any positive traits exclusive to either men or women without them having negative assumptions about the sex they are assigned to.
Masculine and feminine traits are constructed but it’s impossible to escape thousands of years worth of conditioning.
Gender issues are about finding out what your individual qualities are and expressing them irrespective of whether you are a man or a woman.

T-shirt Taster
Here is a little taster of some recent garments I've printed using the same patterns seen on the chairs below. The t-shirt is a 3 colour screen print. Many more to come when the burden of the coming
assessments are over. I'm working on some women's wear too.

Chairs
Here are a couple of chairs I've recently upholstered, painted and sanded down. Both fabric designs were screen printed in three colours. I've also made a matching cork board and chalk board for the shoot. I'm hoping to use some of the left over fabric to make some garments and possibly print some t-shirts soon too.

Pattern Plans
This week I've been trying out some fabric printing and trying to integrate more texture into my screen prints. I've got plans to upholster a couple of chairs with my fabric. Screen printing all day tomorrow as a birthday treat!

Challenge
Rufus set me a tricky challenge over the weekend as part of our 'Play' project at uni. I've only tried (and failed) animation a couple of times but here goes another.
Hopefully this will be a test for something A LOT more resolved.

Moorlands and Mossy Puddles
Here are some photos from my bike ride Moorlands, a disused sheepskin wool factory once used for making coats and slippers. Years ago the site made a great place for fashion shoots but it's all fenced off now so the puddles seemed more appealing.

Good Luck
I've definitely had amulets on my mind after my last project so I thought I'd try a mini mural of a horse shoe. I'm working on a new project, trying to push myself out of my comfort zone of drawing and screen printing. I'm hoping to try out some film making in the coming weeks as well as different types of print.

Mysticism

Here is a 2 colour screenprinted book which I finished on Friday for a project based around mysticism. It includes information about Tasseography (tea leaf reading), the summoning of spirits, voodoo magic, amulets, omens associated with moles on different parts of your body and what it means when you have an itch in a certain place. Apparently if you have an itching nose you will be kissed, cursed, annoyed or meet with a fool within 1 hour. Watch out if you have a mole on your breast, it means you are prone to depression.
I'm only going to be doing a very small edition of these to sell so drop me an e-mail if you would like me to reserve one for you.

Home Amulets
Here is a test screen print I did yesterday for a book I'm working on around the theme of mysticism. This is a house in Slovakia where white painted patterns which have talismatic powers have been used to not only protect the house itself but it's inhabitants.

2 to the Power 10
Today I sent off my contribution to 2 to the power 10, an exhibition in London running from 21st - 29th Oct. Partnering with The British Postal Museum & Archive and CASS Art 32 artists were each given a set of 32 postcards to create a large composite image and having done so, posted each card to a further 32 creative individuals. These collaborators subsequently added their own unique touch to the cards before posting them back to The Orange Dot Gallery to be reassembled in time for the exhibition. I was sent a beautiful papercut postcard by Anne Sorensen to decorate as one of her 32 contributers.
